Japan, Explained
A guy moved to Japan
A guy moved to Japan and joined a gym. After his first workout he noticed something. Everyone wipes down the machine when they’re done. Every person. Every time. Bench, treadmill, dumbbells. There’s a little dispenser of wipes on every wall. He asked online if this was normal. Hundreds of Japanese people answered. Not one of them said “because it’s the rule.” They said: “The next person has to use it.” “Nobody wants to sit in someone else’s sweat.” And the one that got me: “My mom taught me as a kid— leave the bathroom cleaner than you found it. For the next person.” It’s not about the machine. It’s about the person you’ll never meet who uses it after you.
