An 18-year-old girl from New York went away to college in Chicago.
She joined a Christian fellowship. She did Bible study. She volunteered. Her family said she was always the first to hug you at a group and the last to hug you goodbye.
In March, she walked with friends to the lake to look at the skyline.
A man in a black ski mask was hiding behind the lighthouse at the end of the pier.
He shot her in the back as she ran.
The man should not have been in this country.
The border had him in 2023.
The border released him.
Chicago police had him weeks later, for shoplifting.
Chicago released him because Illinois law forbids cooperation with ICE.
He skipped his own court date. The warrant was ignored.
And then, almost three years later, he killed an 18-year-old girl.
Her family’s lawyer used one word. Permanent.
Three chances. Zero taken. One permanent loss.
The country she believed in failed her. Not by accident. By policy.
She should be alive.
God bless every American who refuses to look away.
