American Grit
March 19, 2026. Chicago.
March 19, 2026. Chicago. An 18-year-old college freshman walks down to the lake at midnight with her friends. A pier. A lighthouse. The Chicago skyline. Maybe the northern lights if they were lucky. At the end of the pier, behind the lighthouse, a man was hiding. He was dressed in all black. He was wearing a ski mask. He was holding a forty caliber handgun. She walked ahead of her friends. She saw him. She whispered: “someone is behind the lighthouse.” He leapt out. The girls turned and ran. He fired once. Into her back. She fell on the pier. She was eighteen years old. Here is what happened BEFORE the lighthouse. He crossed the border illegally in 2023. Border Patrol caught him. Border Patrol released him. Six weeks later, Chicago arrested him for shoplifting. Chicago could have called ICE. Chicago refused. Chicago is a sanctuary city. He walked. Then he skipped his own court date. A warrant was issued. For almost three years, nothing happened. Until the night he picked up a pistol and waited behind a lighthouse for someone to kill. Three doors. All locked from the inside. By the people we elected to protect her. She should be in class this morning. She should be calling her mom. She should be alive. Don’t let this country forget what was traded for a slogan. And God bless every American who refuses to call this normal.
