On the drive to my grandmother’s village, we passed a little wooden stand by the road.
Fresh vegetables. A carton of eggs. A small open box for the money.
No camera. No cashier. No one watching at all. You take what you want, you leave the coins, you drive off.
These unmanned stands are all over rural Japan. Farmers set them up and check the box at the end of the day. The honesty is the whole business model.
In a lot of places, an open cash box on a public road would be gone in an hour. Money and produce both.
That’s not me saying one country is better. It’s a real difference in what people expect from each other.
So tell me.
How long would an unlocked box full of money last on a road in your town?
