On the drive to my grandmother’s village, we passed a little wooden stand by the road. Fresh vegetables. A carton of eggs. A small open box for the money. No camera. No cashier. No one watching at all. You take what you want, you leave the coins, you drive off. These unmanned stands are all over rural Japan. Farmers set them up and check the box at the end of the day.
