American Grit
She trusted this country.
She trusted this country. She was eighteen years old and a freshman at a Catholic university in Chicago and she walked out to a pier at midnight with her friends to see the skyline and maybe, if they were lucky, the northern lights. She trusted that she lived in a country where you could do that. A country that would not have a man in a ski mask waiting behind a lighthouse at the end of a public pier. A country that would have caught him at the border, or in a jail cell, or in a courtroom, or by checking a single outstanding warrant. That country failed her at every single chance it had. Not by accident. By policy. Read that again. By policy. She should be alive. God bless every American who is fighting to make that country exist again.
