A 22-year-old nursing student laces up her shoes and goes for a morning run on her college campus. Something she did all the time. Something every American daughter should be able to do. She fought for her life. Investigators would later confirm how hard she fought. She did not come back. The man who killed her crossed the border illegally in September 2022. Border Patrol caught him near El Paso. He was released into the country the next day. Read that again. The next day. The next year he was arrested in New York City, accused of harming a child. Released before immigration officers could get there. Then he was cited for shoplifting in Georgia. Released again. Three contacts. Three releases. Then a nursing student, dead beside the campus trail where she trained to spend her life saving other people’s. He is serving life without parole now. That is justice for one man. The law that carries her name goes further: it requires this country to detain illegal immigrants arrested for theft, instead of waving them back onto the street.
