Japan, Explained
You buy a hot snack
You buy a hot snack at a convenience store in Japan. You step outside. And you stop. You stand right there next to the vending machines, or just outside the door, and you eat it. Then you walk. That’s the rule. Nobody told you. You’ll never see it written down. You just notice. A whole country of people pausing. Eating where they bought it. Drinking the coffee next to the machine. Finishing the rice ball before they move on. It’s not because eating while walking is forbidden. It’s because the food deserves your full attention. And the person who made it deserves to know you ate it on purpose.
