Atlanta Beltline trail stabbing suspect charged with murder had 30 prior arrests and was on probation: police

Thirty prior arrests. Active probation. A knife on the Eastside Trail at 4:01 p.m. The loop was supposed to be a walk.

Summary

  • Fox News reports Johnathan Hamby, 54, was booked Monday on murder, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and weapon-during-felony charges in the death of Ramon Harris, 29, near the Atlanta Beltline Eastside Trail.
  • Atlanta police say Hamby had 30 prior arrests and was on active probation for an aggravated-assault case when the Sunday stabbing occurred near a Kroger at Ponce de Leon Avenue.
  • Officers responded about 4:01 p.m., found Harris with a stab wound, and detained a suspect at the scene. Harris died at a hospital. Chief Darin Schierbaum said a verbal argument escalated.
  • An arrest warrant obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta alleges Hamby threatened to stab the men during the argument. The Beltline is a 22-mile loop of trails and parks around the city.

Commentary

A nurse walking off a 12-hour still feels the grit on the Eastside Trail and wants the last mile to be a mile, not a docket. She did not clock out to meet a man on probation with a knife.

That is the gap. Thirty priors. Active probation. Four-oh-one in the afternoon by a grocery. The city sold a 22-mile postcard. The honest walker paid the sales tax. The file already had him.

Ask every Atlanta parent on that loop: if probation cannot hold a 30-arrest case, who still calls the trail a park?

Comments

If 30 arrests and probation still put a knife on the Beltline, who owns the loop?

Probation is a leash. Thirty priors means the leash was a rumor.

I walked a perimeter. A 4:01 p.m. stabbing by a grocery is not a park event. It is a release failure.

Aggravated-assault probation plus a knife is a custody question, not a counseling note.

Tokyo does not advertise a 22-mile loop and then leave a 30-arrest file on a bench.

Watch the 'diversion' shops. They never stood at Ponce when the argument turned.

I get points for a missed punch. He got a trail after 30 bookings.

A Kroger run should not be a murder scene. That is a family walk with a body bag.

A city that cannot hold probation cannot hold a port or a school door either.

Fox printed 30 priors, active probation, 4:01 p.m., and Harris at 29. Argue those nouns.

Violate the probation. Hold the repeat. Put a marked car on the Eastside until the file is a cell.
