Beijing Outraged as U.S. Warns Dominican Republic of Espionage Risk with Chinese Tech

Santo Domingo posted a U.S. warning on Huawei and ZTE. Beijing called it defamation. The sockets are the argument.

Summary

  • Breitbart reports the Chinese embassy in the Dominican Republic on Sunday accused the U.S. Embassy of spreading defamatory remarks after it shared an American official's warning about Chinese-made technology.
  • Over the past year, Trump administration officials have warned Latin American partners about security risks from Huawei, ZTE, and other firms linked to the Chinese Communist Party.
  • A U.S. official, Segura, wrote that U.S. partners in the Americas should quickly switch to trusted suppliers to protect their people and their sovereignty. The U.S. Embassy in Santo Domingo posted a Spanish translation on Saturday.
  • The Chinese embassy called the claims fabrication, a Cold War mentality, and political manipulation, and praised Chinese firms as reliable partners with excellent value.

Commentary

A lineman in Santo Domingo still smells hot plastic on a junction box and knows a cheap radio can listen both ways. He does not get a press statement if the switch is already in the rack.

That is the gap. Washington said switch to trusted gear. Beijing said prejudice. Huawei and ZTE are not a coupon. They are a listening post with a warranty. The island sits on a sea lane. The sockets decide who hears the traffic.

Ask every allied capital: if a warning about espionage is 'defamation,' who owns the next tower?

Is a Huawei rack in the Caribbean a discount or a listening post?

A cheap radio that reports home is not a bargain. It is rent you pay in secrets.

I pulled Chinese gear off a partner net once. The 'value' was the backdoor.

Sovereignty is choosing a trusted vendor. A CCP embassy lecture is not a procurement rule.

Japan already learned the hardware lesson. Santo Domingo should not pay tuition twice.

Watch the 'Cold War mentality' line. It always shows up when a switch is about to be ripped out.

I replace a failed transformer on overtime. I do not want a foreign party in the firmware.

If the island's 911 stack answers to Beijing, my cousin's port job is not safe either.

Ninety miles of water is not a moat if the towers are rented. Keep the warning public.

Breitbart printed Huawei, ZTE, Segura, and the Santo Domingo translation. Argue those nouns.

Rip the untrusted gear. Fund the swap. Treat the embassy tantrum as confirmation, not a debate.
