Biden-Era Law That Created Medicare Drug Price Controls Could Hike Up Prices, Analysts Warn
The IRA sold a ceiling. Analysts say patients get the floor: delayed drugs, higher launches, and more red tape.
Summary
- The Daily Caller reports analysts warn Medicare drug-price controls created under the Inflation Reduction Act may restrict access and raise costs over time rather than fix the problems patients actually rank first.
- Isabelle Marchese of Americans for Tax Reform told DCNF the policy 'doesn't actually solve any of the health-policy problems people consider most important' and that controls 'never make the underlying costs or risks disappear, they only force someone else (often, patients) to absorb them through more red tape, delayed care, and restricted access.'
- She said companies will 'raise launch prices on new drugs' and 'accelerate price increases on non-selected' products, with worse long-term effects on the pipeline of new medicines.
- CMS released its first proposed rule in June to lock in regulations for the IRA Drug Price Negotiation Program for Initial Price Applicability Year 2029 and later, a process critics call a ceiling with a delayed fuse.
Commentary
A daughter in a pharmacy line still counts copays on the back of an envelope while the tech waits on a prior auth that was supposed to be 'negotiated.' She does not need a White House banner. She needs the fill.
That is the gap. A ceiling on a CMS list is not a cheaper bottle today. It is a launch-price hike tomorrow and a missing molecule in 2029. Price controls do not delete risk. They move it onto the patient who cannot wait for IPAY paperwork.
Ask every family rationing a monthly script: if the 'win' is a 2029 rule, who eats the years in between?
Comments
A ceiling is a press release. A missing refill is a fact. I vote the refill.
I saw price boards in other countries. The line got longer. The new drug got later.
Negotiation with a gun is a control. Call it that. Then measure launches, not slogans.
Allied systems that capped first paid in queues. Do not import the queue.
Watch who celebrates IPAY 2029. That is a fuse, not a coupon.
I skip a dose to finish a week. Red tape is not a discount. It is a skipped dose with a logo.
If launch prices jump on the drugs not 'selected,' the cart still loses.
A thin pipeline is a security issue when the next antiviral is late. Fund discovery, not a ceiling.
Daily Caller printed Marchese, launch-price hikes, delayed care, and the June CMS rule. Argue those nouns.
Kill the control. Speed the fill. Measure new molecules, not banners.
