A grandfather still holds a siddur with cracked dry pages and walks into Friday lights because that is what his people do. Three hundred seventy-five people were in Central Synagogue. Two were assaulted. The man charged did not hide the motive. He said it into a recorder: race and religion.
That is the gap. A kosher grocer waits for a patrol car that may or may not come. Campus crowds spent two years chanting Israel off the map. Then a Bronx man walked into Midtown and made the chant physical. Hate-crime statutes exist for this hour, not for a seminar.
Ask every DA who treated synagogue security as optional: if he said it was about Jews and about Israel, what part of 'hate crime' are you still debating?
