Charlotte man accused of mass shooting threats at 5 schools released days before classes begin

Five felony threat counts. Bond cut from $135,000 to $60,000. Released Saturday. Kids back Tuesday.

Summary

  • Fox News reports Drew Andres Owens, 33, was released from Mecklenburg County Jail at 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 22, three days before Charlotte-Mecklenburg students returned on Aug. 25.
  • A grand jury indicted him in March 2025 on five counts of communicating threats of mass violence on educational property. He has pleaded not guilty. Cases remain pending.
  • Four counts allege Feb. 15, 2025, emails threatening to slaughter staff and students at West Charlotte High, Ardrey Kell High, Community House Middle, and Hawk Ridge Elementary. A fifth alleges a mailed threat against Garinger High naming a student with two shotguns and an AR-15. No such student was enrolled.
  • Court records show the four-school bond fell from $135,000 with monitoring in February 2025 to $60,000 on May 1, 2026. The Garinger case carried $15,000. A surety posted the $60,000 the Friday night before release. His father, a West Charlotte ROTC instructor, told police he believed his son sent the threats.

Commentary

A crossing guard in Charlotte still tastes dust on a stop sign and counts backpacks the way she counts change. She did not sign up to guess whether Saturday's release is Monday's drill.

That is the gap. Five felonies. Slaughter language. Bond cut in half. Out on Aug. 22. Class on Aug. 25. The father, who teaches ROTC in one of the named schools, already told police he believed it. The honest parent bought folders. The court sold a number.

Look every CMS mother in the eye: if a five-school threat case can walk three days before the bell, who still owns the door?

A bond cut is not mercy. It is a Tuesday backpack with a question mark.

I locked an armory. Naming two shotguns and an AR in a mailed threat is not a prank file.

Five pending felonies on educational property is a hold, not a $60,000 story.

Japan does not cut a school-threat bond and then send the kids back on Tuesday.

Watch the May 1 reduction. Someone argued monitoring was enough. The father already disagreed.

I get points for a missed lockout. He got Saturday morning and a school week.

Hawk Ridge is an elementary. That word should have frozen the bond. It did not.

A city that cannot hold a threat file cannot hold a stadium or a rail platform either.

Fox printed 11:30 a.m. Aug. 22, five counts, $135,000 to $60,000, and the five schools. Argue those nouns.

Restore the high bond. Monitor or hold. Put a deputy on the named campuses until the docket is done.
