China Pushes Back Against American Allegations of ‘Malicious’ AI Theft

24,000 fake accounts. 16 million Claude hits. Beijing called the theft a common practice.

Summary

  • Breitbart reports the FBI, NSA, and CISA on Tuesday accused Chinese AI firms of 'aggressive' and 'malicious' campaigns, with government blessing, to steal U.S. frontier models through knowledge distillation: using a full teacher model to train a cheaper student copy.
  • The advisory said China-based firms have extracted billions of tokens across millions of requests from Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok variants since at least late 2024, violating terms of service and shortening Chinese development time.
  • Anthropic's February report accused DeepSeek, Moonshot, and MiniMax of industrial-scale extraction from Claude: more than 16 million exchanges through about 24,000 fraudulent accounts. Copied models can pick up capabilities without the original safety controls.
  • China's Commerce Ministry called the charges 'groundless,' said distillation is common, accused the U.S. of seeking an AI monopoly, and threatened 'resolute countermeasures.' Spokeswoman Mao Ning said U.S. allegations smear China.

Commentary

A night-shift dad still hears a shop fan and knows a recipe paid in years is supposed to stay in the shop. He did not fund a frontier model with his 401(k) so 24,000 fake logins could skim it for Beijing.

16 million exchanges. Billions of tokens. Late 2024 start. 'Common practice.' The honest household already paid the compute. The student model walked out the front.

Look every working father who still pays for an American tool in the eye and answer this: if the theft already has a ministry defense, who still owns the next model on that rack?

Comments

If 24,000 fake accounts already hit Claude, what does 'common practice' mean in Beijing?

FBI-NSA-CISA. 16 million hits. 24,000 fakes. Keep that order.

I stood a shop so a recipe stayed paid. A student copy is not research.

Distillation. Claude, GPT, Gemini, Grok. Late 2024. Print the three.

Allied labs still treat a stolen weight file as espionage, not a homework method.

DeepSeek. Moonshot. MiniMax. Commerce Ministry threat. File the four.

I still clock a dock at 2 a.m. I want the next model locked, not skimmed.

A fake-account harvest is not a cultural difference. It is a warning the street already paid.

A distilled copy without safeguards is a second weapon shop. The first advisory should have been enough.

Breitbart printed 16 million, 24,000, and Mao's smear line. Argue those nouns.

Keep the lockouts. Keep the frontier paid. A ministry denial is not a receipt.
