A Laredo dock hand still smells diesel off the bank and knows that brown water does not care who paid a coyote. He did not clock a night shift so six more runners could treat the river like a sidewalk.
Ninety percent down. Thirty-seven thousand rescues. One thousand one hundred twenty-eight. The honest dad already paid the levy. The six still paid a smuggler.
Look every working father who still lives inside that bend in the eye and answer this: if the marine unit has to fish a man out of a current that already dropped 96 percent, who still owns the next night on that river?
