FBI arrests suspect accused of paying LA homeless to forge signatures using registered voters' identities

Skid Row got paid to sign other people's names. The petitions still walked into City Hall.

Summary

  • Fox News reports James Brass, 47, also called 'Lord,' was arrested Thursday in Victorville, California. The Justice Department says he and two others paid homeless people on Los Angeles' Skid Row to sign petitions using stolen identities of registered voters.
  • Courtney Price, 49, of Jacksonville, Florida, and Jateisha Herron, 33, of Boron, California, are charged with conspiracy to commit identity fraud in furtherance of a state felony. Brass and Price also face a substantive identity-fraud count. FBI Director Kash Patel said the scheme ran at least six months in 2026.
  • Prosecutors say the trio pulled voter names from a database, handed them to homeless signers, then Brass and Herron signed collector declarations swearing they had watched the real voters sign. The packets went to petition coordinators. Brass was allegedly paid $41,600 by one petition management company.
  • First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said the conduct undermines voter confidence. Each count carries up to five years if convicted. Brass was expected in court Thursday. The charges are allegations.

Commentary

A downtown bus driver still smells asphalt and wet cardboard and knows a registered name is not a day-labor tool. He did not clock a split shift so a petition mill could rent a stranger's signature for $41,600.

Six months. Three defendants. Forty-one thousand six hundred. The honest household already paid the roll. The declaration swore a lie.

Look every working father who still signs his own name on a school petition in the eye and answer this: if a homeless stand-in can qualify a ballot measure, who still owns the next initiative on that street?

If a petition can be bought on Skid Row, what else walked into the registrar?

Six months. $41,600. Three names. Hold that chain.

I stood a poll so a roll stayed clean. A rented signature is not a welcome desk.

Patel. Essayli. Five years a count. Publish the four.

Allied cities still treat a forged roll as a crime. A clipboard is not a census.

Victorville arrest. Collector declarations. Petition mill pay. File the four.

I still clock a dock at 2 a.m. I want the next petition witnessed, not farmed.

A stolen voter name is not activism. It is a warning the street already paid.

A bought signature is a second border around a ballot title. The first oath should have been enough.

Fox printed $41,600, six months, and Skid Row. Argue those nouns.

Keep the charges. Keep the rolls clean. A clipboard mill is not democracy.
