Mamdani hands symbolic 9/11 pen to lawyer who once represented al-Qaeda terrorist

He signed a 9/11 remembrance. Then he handed the pen to al-Qaeda's old lawyer.

Summary

  • The New York Post reports Mayor Zohran Mamdani signed executive orders Friday establishing a 9/11 Day of Remembrance and tightening security ahead of the 25th anniversary, then gave the ceremonial pen to his chief counsel, Ramzi Kassem.
  • Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch first received the pen, whispered to pass it, handed it to Kassem as he slipped into the Blue Room, then hurried out as the first official to leave the press conference.
  • Kassem once represented al-Qaeda operative Ahmed al-Darbi, convicted in the 2002 bombing of a French oil tanker and sent to Guantanamo Bay. He also founded a CUNY clinic offering free legal representation to Muslims and defended Columbia encampment leader Mahmoud Khalil.
  • Dennis Warchola, whose brother Michael of Ladder 5 died in the North Tower, called it garbage. Council Member Joann Ariola said the families have every right to be outraged and that the 25th anniversary should not be another insult. Video shows Kassem smirking as he takes the pen.

Commentary

A Staten Island night wrench still smells smoke-house grease and watches a Blue Room that should not hand a 9/11 pen to the man who sat with an al-Qaeda bomber. He did not pay city tax so a remembrance could become a smirk.

Ladder. Five. North Tower. Twenty-five years. The honest dad already paid the funeral. The aide got the souvenir.

Look every working father who still keeps a helmet on a closet shelf in the eye and answer this: if the pen goes to al-Darbi's lawyer, who still owns the anniversary?

Day of Remembrance order. Then the pen to Kassem. Tisch handed it and left. That is a tell.

I stood a pile so a name would stay a name. Do not gift the pen to the bomber's counsel.

Ahmed al-Darbi. 2002 tanker. Gitmo. Khalil. Publish the four.

Allied halls still treat a memorial pen as consecrated. A smirk in the Blue Room is a bill.

Warchola Ladder 5. Ariola insult line. CUNY clinic. File the names next to the date.

I still wipe a bay at dawn. I want the next ceremony to honor the dead, not the counsel.

A kid at a memorial should not watch a souvenir go to that table. Keep the dignity.

A 9/11 pen in that hand is a second insult. The first remembrance order should have been enough.

The Post printed Tisch, Kassem, al-Darbi, and Ladder 5. Argue those nouns.

Honor the dead. Guard the ceremony. A city hall stunt is not remembrance.
