Maryland sheriff torches Democrats over law he says puts illegal immigrants first

Sixteen sheriffs sued. He said it is only a matter of time. The jail door is the argument.

Summary

  • Fox News reports Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler, a 40-year lawman, told Fox after House Judiciary testimony that Maryland's Community Trust Act will put dangerous illegal immigrants back on the street. He is leading 16 fellow sheriffs, about two-thirds of the state, in a lawsuit against the restrictions on local-ICE cooperation.
  • Gahler said his greatest fear is that jail officers will have to release an illegal immigrant ICE has already flagged as a public-safety or national-security threat, instead of a direct transfer. He said opening that door is insane.
  • He said if a released inmate commits another crime, the blame sits with the politicians who wrote the Act, that they understand and do not care, and that the legislature is criminal-friendly.
  • He pointed to two Harford families: Rachel Morin, 37, a mother of five, raped and murdered on the Ma and Pa Trail in Bel Air in August 2023, for which Victor Antonio Martinez-Hernandez, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, received life without parole; and Kayla Hamilton, 20, autistic, raped and strangled in her Aberdeen home in July 2022.

Commentary

A Bel Air night dispatcher still hears a radio hiss and watches a vinyl chair that should not be the last seat a mother of five holds. She did not work a double so a Trust Act could beat a detainer.

Sixteen sheriffs. Two-thirds of the state. August 2023. July 2022. The honest dad already paid the jail. The door is the tell.

Look every working mother on a Maryland trail in the eye and answer this: if ICE already flagged the inmate, who still wants the sheriff to unlock the street?

16 sheriffs. Two-thirds of Maryland. Community Trust Act. Direct transfer blocked. That is the door.

I walked a cellblock. A flagged threat leaves in cuffs, not in sneakers.

Gahler 40 years. House Judiciary. Morin August 2023. Hamilton July 2022. Publish the four.

Allied jails still treat a federal flag as a hold. A Trust Act is a release memo.

Martinez-Hernandez life without parole. El Salvador. Five kids. File the three.

I still dispatch after midnight. I want the next flagged name in an ICE van, not on a trail.

A mother of five on a trail is the whole brief. Keep the transfer. Kill the Act.

A detainer the jail cannot honor is a second crime waiting. Sue it down.

Fox printed 16 sheriffs, the Act, Morin, and Hamilton. Argue those nouns.

Win the suit. Restore the handoff. A flagged inmate is not a neighbor.
