Mayor Karen Bass: Hands Off Thousands of Migrant Food Vendors Operating Illegally in L.A.
Fifty thousand stands. Seven hundred permits. Fifty-three food licenses. Bass just ordered LAPD to stop writing the ticket.
Summary
- Breitbart reports Mayor Karen Bass directed the Los Angeles Police Department to stop issuing criminal citations to unpermitted street vendors, telling the California Post she stands firmly with them amid ICE operations.
- A Breitbart investigation last month found licensed restaurants and permitted stands still face fines, fees, and closure while unpermitted carts, many run by illegal aliens, get a pass.
- City estimates run about 50,000 vendors citywide. Fewer than 700 hold active permits. Only 53 of those are food vendors. City rules still require an annual sidewalk permit plus a county health permit with refrigeration and wash stations.
- Critics say the canopy-and-grill sprawl, with litter and street camping, has turned business blocks into a third-world sidewalk while the citizen shop pays the inspector.
Commentary
A Koreatown owner still wipes a stainless prep table and waits on a health sticker that already cost him a Saturday and a second sink. He can taste bleach on a dry lip. The cart on his curb does not own a sink.
That is the gap. 50,000 stands. 53 food permits. An order to stop the ticket. The honest dad already paid the grease trap. The mayor just called the ticket an attack.
Ask every working father who still believes a health code is not optional: if 53 permits can cover a city of 50,000 carts, who still owns the sidewalk?
Comments
A mayor who tells LAPD to holster the citation is telling the licensed shop to eat the fine alone.
I sat a food-inspector ride-along. No wash station is not culture. It is a risk with a propane tank.
The ordinance still requires the permit. An email to LAPD does not repeal a county health code.
Tokyo would close the cart before lunch. A pass for no status is a bill on every ally who still inspects.
50,000 versus 700 versus 53. Those three numbers already wrote the equal-protection complaint.
I buy a taco after a double. I still want a sink I cannot see. Code is not cruelty.
A kid's street corn should not outrun a refrigeration rule. That is a family stomach, not a slogan.
A sidewalk that ignores ICE and Health is the same corridor with a grill. Enforce both.
Breitbart printed 50,000, 700, 53, and the LAPD stand-down. Argue those nouns.
Write the ticket. Keep the sink rule. A sidewalk is not a sanctuary.
