NYPD ramping up deployments, launching ‘two major security operations’ — focused on 9/11 ceremonies, Rosh Hashanah

The 25th anniversary shares a Friday with Rosh Hashanah. Tisch put more cops on both than any prior 9/11.

Summary

  • The New York Post reports NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Wednesday that Friday's street deployment will be larger than any prior Sept. 11 anniversary because of the Iran war and because the memorial coincides with the Jewish New Year.
  • Tisch announced two operations: heightened security before the Ground Zero ceremony, and patrols of synagogues, shuls, yeshivas, and Jewish cultural sites across the five boroughs for Rosh Hashanah. She would not give a headcount.
  • Mayor Zohran Mamdani warned Lower Manhattan would be virtually closed Friday morning. Vice President JD Vance and former Presidents Clinton, Bush, and Obama are expected. Secret Service fencing will run the east side of West Side Highway from Liberty to Fulton, and trucks are banned south of Canal.
  • Tisch said antisemitic hate crimes are up 8 percent this year and that half of the city's hate crimes in the first eight months targeted Jewish New Yorkers. Deputy Commissioner Rebecca Weiner said the threat is more geographically decentralized than 25 years ago.

Commentary

A Staten Island plumber still packs a lunch pail and a yarmulke in the same bag on a Friday that already has too much history. He did not pay the city levy so an Iranian war and a High Holiday could share one thin blue line.

Two operations. Twenty-five years. Eight percent. Half the hate-crime ledger. The honest dad already paid the lane. The calendar paid the overlap.

Look every working father who still rides that ferry in the eye and answer this: if the 25th anniversary and Rosh Hashanah have to share one Friday under Iranian fire, who still owns the next synagogue door?

Tisch. Two operations. Ground Zero plus five-borough shuls. Hold that chain.

I stood a wire so a memorial stayed a memorial. A heavy-weapons team is not theater.

Vance. Clinton. Bush. Obama. Fence from Liberty to Fulton. Publish the four.

Allied cities still put a badge on a holy day. A closed street is not an insult.

8 percent antisemitic rise. Half of eight-month hate crimes Jewish. Weiner on decentralized threats. File the four.

I still clock a dock at 2 a.m. I want the next shul watched, not explained away.

A High Holiday under a war calendar is not a parade. It is a warning the street already paid.

An Iran war on a 9/11 Friday is a second border in Lower Manhattan. The first badge should have been enough.

The Post printed two operations, 8 percent, and half the hate-crime book. Argue those nouns.

Keep the Counterterrorism Bureau. Keep the synagogue patrol. A visitor with a grudge is not a neighbor.
