‘Open sore’: Families face agonizing wait as 9/11 mastermind's trial pushed nearly 27 years after attacks

June 5, 2028. Nearly 27 years. The fifth judge just barred the 2007 FBI statements.

Summary

  • Fox News reports a military judge set alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and three co-defendants for trial on June 5, 2028, nearly 27 years after the attacks that killed almost 3,000 people. The date is tentative.
  • The judge recently barred prosecutors from using Mohammed's 2007 statements to FBI agents, finding them tainted by CIA custody. The government did not appeal, saying an appeal could jeopardize the 2028 date. He is the fifth military judge since the 2012 arraignment.
  • Mohammed was captured in Pakistan in 2003, held in CIA black sites, and moved to Guantanamo in 2006. A fifth defendant, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, was found mentally incompetent. In 2024 the defendants reached plea deals for life instead of death. Then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin withdrew them. An appeals court later blocked guilty pleas under the dead deals.
  • Port Authority veteran John Ryan, who lost 37 colleagues and spent nine months on the pile, told Fox the men have admitted involvement and the process has taken 25 years. Sean Passananti, whose father died on the 100th floor of the North Tower, called the delay a twilight zone. Obama's 2009 Manhattan-trial plan was abandoned after New York officials objected.

Commentary

A Port Authority widow still feels cold rail on a memorial name and knows a trial date is supposed to be a year, not a generation. She did not wait through 25 Septembers so a fifth judge could lose the 2007 statements.

2003 capture. 2012 arraignment. Fifth judge. June 5, 2028. The honest household already paid the names. The cell still has no verdict.

Look every working father who still reads a brother's name in the eye and answer this: if they already admitted the plot, who still owns the next calendar on that commission?

Comments

If they already admitted the plot, why is the verdict still a 2028 maybe?

June 5, 2028. Fifth judge. 2007 statements out. Hold that chain.

I stood a pile so a name got a verdict. A 27-year wait is not due process. It is a stall.

2003 capture. 2006 Gitmo. 2012 arraignment. Print the three.

Allied courts still try a mass-murder plot in a decade, not a generation.

Austin withdrew 2024 pleas. Appeals court blocked them. Obama 2009 plan died. File the three.

I still clock a dock at 2 a.m. I want the next date to hold, not slide again.

An open sore on a 25th anniversary is not a legal nuance. It is a warning the street already paid.

A commission without a verdict is a second wound on the pile. The first arraignment should have been enough.

Fox printed June 5, 2028, the fifth judge, and Ryan's 37. Argue those nouns.

Keep the date. Try the case. A cell is not a museum.
