Scandal rocks California school district after parents kept in the dark about toxic classrooms

Kids were back ten days. Then the email. Eight rooms low, two moderate, four high. Teachers in N95s. Parents last.

Summary

  • The New York Post, citing KGTV, reports Poway Unified in San Diego County emailed parents on Aug. 22 that Black Mountain Middle School's principal had reported mold in classrooms before the year started.
  • The email went out ten days after students had already returned from summer break. Tests found mold spores in more than a dozen rooms: eight low, two moderate, four high. The district said results were not final.
  • Rooms were cleaned Aug. 10, but a musty odor persisted in some areas. Some teachers wore N95 masks after mold was found in carpets, desks, and other spots.
  • Parents told KGTV this was not the first mold finding at the school and demanded to know why they were not told before sending children back.

Commentary

A mother in Poway still packs a lunch on a laminate counter and trusts a classroom more than a crawl space. She does not get a ten-day head start if the carpet is already feeding a spore.

That is the gap. Cleaned Aug. 10. Kids back. Email Aug. 22. Four rooms high. Teachers in N95s. Parents last. The honest family paid the property tax. The district paid them with a musty hallway and a late note.

Look every Poway parent in the eye: if a teacher needs a mask before a parent gets a sentence, who still owns the classroom?

If teachers mask for mold before parents get the email, who owns the classroom?

Ten days is not a delay. It is a choice to let a kid sit in the count.

I condemned a barracks for less. Four high rooms is a closure, not a newsletter.

Notice before occupancy is the baseline. Aug. 22 after return is a records problem.

Japan does not send a class into a musty room and then mail the spore chart.

Watch the 'results not final' line. It is how a district buys another week of silence.

I get written up for a missing SDS sheet. They hid a hallway.

N95s on teachers is the tell. Pull the four high rooms. Tell us the same morning.

A district that hides spores will hide a curriculum fight too. Sunlight is the fix.

The Post printed Aug. 22, ten days, 8/2/4, and the N95s. Argue those nouns.

Close the high rooms. Publish the next test the hour it lands. Fire the delay, not the parent.
