Trump’s Push To Cut Korea Drills Exposes Deeper Rift With Seoul

Ulchi Freedom Shield still started Monday. Trump told the truth about the bill. Twenty-one thousand troops is not a free sample.

Summary

  • The Daily Caller reports U.S.-South Korea ties are under strain over military commitments, trade, and President Donald Trump's outreach to North Korea, with Trump ordering a substantial reduction in the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise.
  • In a Truth Social post, Trump said the drills are 'not only costly, with much of these costs paid for by the United States of America (as usual!),' and that they 'send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile.'
  • The 2025 exercise used about 21,000 soldiers, including 18,000 South Koreans, per AP. A similar count had been planned for 2026, Reuters reported. The 2026 drill began Monday and runs through Aug. 27. Officials have not publicly listed which pieces will be cut.
  • U.S. Forces Korea commander Gen. Xavier Brunson met South Korean defense officials Tuesday on the scale-back. Polling cited in the piece shows a sharp drop in South Korean confidence that Washington is a reliable partner.

Commentary

A specialist at a motor pool in Humphreys still changes a filter with red dust on the knuckles and knows who paid for the fuel blivet. He does not need a poll. He needs Seoul on the invoice.

That is the gap. Twenty-one thousand bodies. Eighteen thousand of them ROK. The U.S. still wrote 'as usual' on the check. Trump cut the pageant and kept the start date. Pyongyang will call it victory. A victory is a canceled alliance. This is a bill.

Ask every American who funded that exercise: if the partner wants the full script, who still gets a free rehearsal?

If the U.S. writes the check, who decides the size of Ulchi Freedom Shield?

A drill is a tool. A free drill is a habit. Habits get expensive.

I ran Ulchi iterations. Cut the circus. Keep the C2. Do not confuse fireworks with readiness.

Status-of-forces is a treaty. Cost shares are a negotiation. Trump opened the negotiation in public.

Japan pays more than it used to. Seoul can read a ledger. Reliability is a two-way wire.

Watch who briefs 'hostile signal' as if the U.S. owes a parade. Deterrence is a capability, not a calendar.

I pay the tax. 21,000 names is a lot of per diem. Show me Seoul's line item.

If the drill runs through the 27th, it is not canceled. It is edited. Read the edit.

Kim will boast. Let him. Interceptors and a paid partner beat a full dress rehearsal on the U.S. tab.

Daily Caller printed 21,000, 18,000 ROK, Aug. 27, Brunson, and the Truth Social line. Argue those nouns.

Share the cost. Keep the command. Do not buy Pyongyang's press release.
