A recruit's mother still keeps a pressed uniform on a vinyl hanger for an Aug. 27 ceremony that will now be a casket. She does not need a seminar on 'root causes.' She needs three names and a courtroom that does not blink.
That is the gap. Soft-on-crime cities treat a badge as a costume. Ramirez treated it as a job he had not even started. Ten days from graduation is not a statistic. It is a stolen oath.
Look every academy class in this country in the eye: if a man can be shot in his own driveway before the badge is pinned, what did the last decade of catch-and-release buy the next recruit?
