A mother in Staunton still checks the deadbolt twice because the news said the jail has three men accused of hunting children. She did not vote for a sanctuary memo. She voted for a night that stays ordinary. ICE put detainers on the door. The governor had already told the agency to step back.
That is the gap. Parents wait in vinyl chairs at the elementary office to prove they are allowed to pick up their own kid. Accused predators sat in one jail after a statewide order that treated ICE like the problem. One man was a 2021 release. One had been here since 2005. The children were the constant.
Look Spanberger in the eye for the parents of a 13-year-old: if ICE is at the jail with a detainer, what possible public interest is served by telling them to wait outside?
