For three years.
Nobody knocked.
Because Chicago, on principle, doesn’t ask.
An 18-year-old college freshman paid for that principle in March, on a pier on Lake Michigan, with a single round to the back.
She was a freshman in the business school.
She volunteered at her church.
She was on a pier with her friends to look at the skyline.
She believed in a country where you could walk out to look at a skyline.
She was right about the country.
She was wrong about the city.
She should be alive.
